I Was Pregnant at My Wedding — Then Another Pregnant Woman Stopped the Ceremony and Said He Was Her Baby’s Father Too

Chapter 97: Ethan Finally Used the Right Word

Ethan’s apology arrived through Daniel first.

That was how Clara knew it might be real.

No late-night text.

No wounded voicemail.

No message designed to slip past rules and land directly in her chest.

Just a formal request for a supervised meeting at Daniel’s office, with Olivia allowed to attend and Lily kept elsewhere.

For two days, Clara left the request unanswered.

Not because she was afraid of Ethan.

Because she was learning the difference between urgency and importance.

On Thursday afternoon, she agreed.

Daniel’s office had no dramatic furniture.

A round table.

Three chairs.

A glass wall looking onto a quiet corridor.

It was the sort of room where people could not perform unless everyone chose to pretend with them.

Clara did not choose.

Ethan arrived five minutes early.

He looked thinner, though not in a romantic way.

More like a man who had discovered mirrors were honest when crowds were gone.

His watch was gone.

So was the careless confidence that used to enter rooms before he did.

He stood when Clara came in.

She sat without greeting him.

Olivia sat beside her with crossed arms.

Daniel remained near the end of the table, not speaking, but present enough to keep every word accountable.

Ethan looked at Clara, then at the recorder Daniel had placed in the centre.

“I understand this is being recorded,” Ethan said.

Daniel nodded. “Yes.”

Ethan breathed out. “Good. It should be.”

That was the first surprise.

The second came when Ethan did not start with his suspension, his father, or how much he had lost.

He said, “I am sorry.”

Olivia made a small sound, unimpressed.

Ethan continued anyway. “Not sorry that things became public. Not sorry that the court saw it. Not sorry that I have consequences. I am sorry for what I did to you.”

The words sat in the room.

Clara let them stay there without rescuing him from them.

“I knew about the agreement,” he said. “I knew it could be used against you if you were made to look unstable. I told myself it was protection. I told myself we would never need it. Then Vanessa came to the wedding, and instead of protecting you, I watched you stand there alone because I was trying to save my position.”

His voice cracked once.

He did not ask for comfort.

That was new.

“I let my mother pressure you. I let my father move people like pieces. I treated Lily like proof, not a person.”

Clara’s hand tightened under the table.

Not enough for Ethan to see.

Enough for herself.

He looked down. “For months, I said they ruined me. Vanessa. My father. The board. The videos. But they did not build the part of me that chose convenience over decency. I did that.”

He looked up then.

“I was not destroyed by them. I was exposed by my own greed.”

The room became very still.

There it was.

The right word.

Not confused.

Not trapped.

Not pressured.

Greed.

Clara felt no triumph.

She had imagined this moment would taste sharp and bright.

Instead, it felt like setting down a heavy bag and realising her hand still ached.

“Thank you for saying it,” she said.

Ethan’s eyes filled, but he blinked it back. “Is there anything I can do?”

“Yes. Follow the order. Respect Lily’s routine. Do not use apologies to ask for shortcuts.”

He nodded once. “I will.”

The meeting had lasted nine minutes.

Seven years had ended in nine quiet minutes.

At the door, Ethan said, “I did love you. In the way I knew how.”

Clara turned back.

“That was the problem, Ethan. You never asked if the way you knew how was enough.”

Then she walked out with Olivia beside her.

This time, no one followed.
