Chapter 74: Vanessa Found Policy Waiting
Vanessa Cole arrived at the hospital lobby in a cream coat and no appointment.
That was the first problem.
The second was Ethan.
He was already there.
The third was Olivia.
She had her phone in one hand and the expression of a woman who had spent weeks learning that public areas had rules too.
Vanessa stopped when she saw them.
For half a second, the old performance tried to arrange itself.
One hand under her bump.
Wet eyes.
Soft mouth.
Then she saw Daniel.
The performance did not fully land.
“Where is Clara?” she asked.
Daniel stepped forward. “Ms Cole, any communication goes through counsel.”
“I need to warn her.”
Olivia tilted her head. “That is new. Usually you arrive with edited footage.”
Vanessa’s face hardened. “This is serious.”
“It became serious at the chapel.”
Ethan moved toward her, slower than he would have once.
“Vanessa,” he said. “Why are you here?”
She looked at him, and for once there was no warmth left to fake.
“Because your father is burning every loose end.”
Ethan swallowed. “Including you?”
She laughed, sharp and scared. “Especially me.”
The security officer approached before the exchange could become a scene.
“Ms Cole, do you have a medical appointment here tonight?”
Vanessa touched her stomach. “I am pregnant.”
The receptionist softened her voice without softening the rule.
“If you require care, we can direct you to triage. If you are here as a visitor, the restrictions remain.”
Olivia murmured, “Policy. My favourite character.”
Vanessa looked toward the lifts.
Not at Ethan.
At the lifts.
Daniel saw it.
So did security.
“You may not approach the maternity ward,” the officer said. “You may not request patient information. You may not record staff or patients without consent.”
Vanessa’s hand tightened around her phone.
Olivia lifted hers openly.
“Please stop filming me,” Vanessa said.
Olivia smiled. “You first.”
A few people turned.
Good.
Public mattered now.
Not gossip public.
Witness public.
Vanessa lowered her voice. “I was told Clara had gone into labour.”
“By whom?” Daniel asked.
No answer.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“By my father?” he asked.
Still nothing.
That silence did the work.
Vanessa looked trapped between confession and survival.
Then she chose the smaller truth.
“Rebecca called me.”
Daniel’s pen moved.
Olivia’s phone stayed steady.
Ethan went very pale.
“Why?” he asked.
Vanessa looked at him like he had finally asked a question worth answering.
“Because Richard wanted me close enough to be blamed if anything went wrong.”
The lobby went still.
Not silent.
Hospitals never went silent.
Machines beeped.
Shoes crossed tile.
A child cried near the entrance.
But around Vanessa, the sentence stood upright.
Daniel said, “Repeat that through your solicitor.”
Vanessa shook her head. “He will ruin me.”
Clara’s voice came from Olivia’s phone.
She had called during the exchange and heard enough.
“No,” Clara said, calm and clear. “He already tried. The difference is, now everyone can see the match.”
Vanessa stared at the phone as if Clara had appeared in the room.
Security guided her away from reception.
Not roughly.
Not dramatically.
Firmly.
Ethan watched her go.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
Upstairs, Clara’s contractions had become regular enough for the midwife to say the words everyone had been circling.
“It may be time to move you to delivery.”
