I Was Pregnant at My Wedding — Then Another Pregnant Woman Stopped the Ceremony and Said He Was Her Baby’s Father Too

Chapter 40: The Name on the Form

Margaret did not try to take the sentence back.

That frightened Clara more than denial would have.

Because Margaret Hayes could polish almost anything.

A lie.

A threat.

A cheque.

A son who carried the wrong woman out of his own wedding.

But this time, she let the words sit raw on the line.

Because Richard told her to be.

Daniel wrote it once, then underlined the time.

Clara kept her voice steady. “When did you know?”

“I suspected after the board meeting,” Margaret said. “I confirmed it today.”

“Why help me?”

Margaret’s laugh was bitter. “Because I wanted a grandchild in the Hayes family. Richard wants an asset under control. There is a difference.”

Clara did not soften.

But she listened.

Margaret continued. “The governance meeting tomorrow is not about asking questions. It is about building a record. He wants you seen as emotional, uncooperative, and unsafe for negotiation.”

Daniel was already drafting conditions.

Solicitor present.

Recording allowed.

No private side discussions.

No signing.

No medical discussion without counsel.

No clinic, hospital, or pregnancy information shared with Hayes representatives.

Clara watched the list grow and realised something.

Richard had built rooms where people felt rude for asking basic protections.

Daniel was building the same room back, only with locks.

Olivia leaned over the desk. “Add no surprise observers.”

Daniel added it.

“And no white envelopes,” Olivia said.

Daniel looked at her.

“What? I have trauma.”

Clara almost smiled.

Then her phone buzzed.

Ethan.

She did not answer.

She texted instead.

Your father’s assistant was copied on Vanessa’s clinic appointments before the wedding. You may still pretend this is about dignity. I will not.

His reply came thirty seconds later.

Clara, please. Do not take those documents into Hayes House.

Olivia stared. “He knew.”

Clara looked at the appointment confirmations, then at Richard’s protection clause.

The question was no longer whether Vanessa had lied.

The question was how many Hayes men had helped her do it.

Daniel printed Ethan’s message and placed it beneath Margaret’s quoted statement.

A stack was forming now.

Not a story.

A record.

Anonymous confirmations.

Rebecca Shaw.

Mr H.

Margaret’s admission.

Ethan’s warning.

Vanessa’s refusal without refusing.

Richard’s proposal that pretended to protect a child by surrounding her mother with permissions.

Clara touched the top page with two fingers. “What happens if I bring all of this?”

Daniel capped his pen. “Richard will call it selective.”

“Is it?”

“No.”

“Will he call me unstable?”

“Probably.”

“Will he try to separate me from my own evidence?”

Daniel’s face hardened. “Not while I am in the room.”

Olivia raised a hand. “And not while I am holding the second recording device.”

Daniel sighed. “We are not calling it that.”

“What are we calling it?”

“A backup.”

“Fine. I am emotionally attached to the backup.”

Margaret remained on the line.

For the first time, Clara heard no command in her silence.

Only fear.

“Clara,” Margaret said quietly, “Richard will offer you something tomorrow.”

“What?”

“I do not know. That is why I am afraid.”

Clara looked down at Lily beneath her palm.

The baby shifted once, stubborn and alive.

Not an asset.

Not a clause.

Not a surname waiting for approval.

A child.

Her child.

Clara said, “Then I will offer him something too.”

Daniel looked up. “What?”

“A choice,” Clara said. “He can answer questions in front of the board, or he can explain why he refused to.”

Olivia smiled slowly.

Margaret whispered, “He will hate that.”

“Good.”

At 8:12 p.m., Daniel sent the conditions to Hayes House.

At 8:19, Richard’s assistant replied.

The meeting will proceed. Recording is not consented to.

Daniel read it aloud.

Clara did not blink. “Then tell them I will not attend.”

At 8:24, a second email arrived.

Recording permitted for minute-taking purposes only.

Daniel smiled for the first time that night.

Clara looked at Rebecca Shaw’s name on the sender line.

Richard’s office had just blinked.

And tomorrow, Clara would walk into Hayes House with the receipts.
