Chapter 80: Vanessa's Name Was Already There
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
An earlier registration entry.
Submitted before the baby was born.
Richard had wanted the record before the child.
Someone had tried to give it to him before Clara had even held Lily properly.
Daniel was already reaching for his bag. “I need to see the records note.”
Ethan stood. “I am coming.”
“No,” Clara said. “This concerns my daughter.”
“It concerns a document someone attempted to create around my daughter.”
“You will wait where staff tell you to wait.”
“I had nothing to do with it.”
“Then you will have no problem letting Daniel verify that.”
Olivia moved to Clara’s side. “Do you want me to go with him?”
Clara looked at Lily.
Then at Olivia.
“No. Stay.”
Daniel left with the nurse.
The door closed.
Ethan remained inside the room only because Clara allowed it, and for the first time he seemed aware of that fact.
He looked smaller under the awareness.
“Clara,” he said quietly, “I swear I did not submit anything.”
She studied him.
Once, she would have wanted to believe his voice.
Now she wanted documents, time stamps, names, and signatures.
“I hope that is true.”
“You do not believe me.”
“I believe evidence.”
He looked away.
Downstairs, Daniel stood at the records office counter while an administrator pulled up the audit log.
“This was flagged automatically because the time stamp came before the recorded delivery time,” she said.
Daniel leaned closer. “Was it submitted internally?”
“No. Through a pre-registration contact form. It was not approved. It created a pending note only.”
“Can you show me the contact details?”
She turned the monitor.
Daniel read the line once.
Then again.
Contact name: Vanessa Cole.
Relationship to child: Family representative.
Requested surname: Hayes.
His face did not change much.
Lawyers trained that way.
But his fingers tightened around the folder.
“Please preserve this audit record and provide a certified copy. Also note that Ms Bennett did not authorise this contact.”
“Already noted,” the administrator said. “The request included a phone number and an email address.”
Daniel looked at the email.
It carried a private consultancy domain already seen in Richard Hayes’s correspondence.
Vanessa and Richard had just stopped being rumour.
They had become paperwork.
Back upstairs, Ethan was pacing now, quietly but visibly.
Clara watched him without comforting him.
Lily slept.
That was the only peace Clara cared about protecting.
The door opened.
Daniel returned with a sealed printout and a face Clara had learned to read.
Not panic.
Not triumph.
Confirmation.
Olivia straightened. “What is it?”
Daniel looked at Clara first, because the truth belonged to her before it became ammunition.
“There was an attempted pre-registration note. It was blocked. Lily’s official registration remains exactly as you signed it.”
Clara breathed once.
Only once.
Ethan stepped forward. “Who submitted it?”
Daniel did not answer him.
He handed the copy to Clara.
She read the first page.
Then the second.
Her expression did not crack when she saw the name.
That was what made Ethan afraid.
“Clara?” he said.
She lifted the paper so he could see the line.
Vanessa Cole.
The room changed temperature.
Ethan stared at the name. “No.”
Olivia laughed once, without humour. “That is becoming a very weak word in this family.”
Daniel’s voice stayed low.
“The requested surname was Hayes. The relationship claimed was family representative. The linked email appears connected to a consultancy used in Richard’s correspondence.”
Ethan went pale.
For once, he did not defend his father immediately.
Clara folded the paper carefully and placed it beside Lily’s bassinet.
There it was.
The first official attempt to claim her daughter had not come after birth.
And Vanessa’s name was sitting right on top of it.
Clara looked at Daniel. “Add it to the evidence pack.”
Then she looked at Ethan.
“Now tell me again this is only about being a father.”
