I Was Pregnant at My Wedding — Then Another Pregnant Woman Stopped the Ceremony and Said He Was Her Baby’s Father Too

Chapter 88: Vanessa's Test Came Back

The paternity result arrived during the lunch adjournment.

Nobody ate.

The court officer handed Daniel a sealed digital confirmation and a printed copy, both received from the independent laboratory under chain-of-custody protocol.

Vanessa saw the envelope before Ethan did.

Her face emptied.

That was how Clara knew.

Some truths entered a room before they were read aloud.

This one came with a laboratory seal, two signatures, and the brutal cleanliness of numbers.

Daniel reviewed the document once.

Then again.

His expression did not change, but Olivia’s fingers tightened around Clara’s sleeve.

“What does it say?” Clara asked quietly.

Daniel closed the folder.

“It excludes Ethan Hayes as the biological father of Vanessa Cole’s child.”

Olivia’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Clara felt the shock move around her, not through her.

Lily was already safe from that lie.

Now the lie had to explain itself.

Across the corridor, Ethan heard his own name.

He turned slowly.

Vanessa stood near the vending machine, one hand on the wall, the other pressed to her stomach.

For months she had carried that claim like a weapon.

Now the weapon had returned without a handle.

Ethan walked toward her.

“Tell me that is wrong.”

Vanessa laughed once.

It was not cruel this time.

It was exhausted.

“You want it to be wrong because then you are only a cheat.”

Ethan stopped.

“What?”

“If the baby is yours, you are selfish. If the baby is not yours, you were also stupid.”

The words hit him harder than any insult Clara had ever spoken.

Daniel stepped between them before the corridor became theatre.

“This will be addressed in the hearing.”

Ethan looked past him to Clara.

There was an old reflex in his face, the impulse to ask her to understand him.

Clara gave him nothing.

Not because she felt nothing.

Because she had learned that sympathy was the door through which Ethan entered and rearranged the furniture.

When the hearing resumed, the laboratory report was entered into evidence.

Ethan’s solicitor objected to “premature characterisation.”

The judge allowed the document.

Facts did not need his comfort.

Vanessa sat with both hands folded over her stomach, no tears left arranged for anyone.

Daniel stood.

“Ms Cole, you publicly stated that Ethan Hayes was the father of your child.”

“Yes.”

“You entered his wedding carrying an ultrasound photograph suggesting the same.”

“Yes.”

“You allowed that claim to be used to pressure Clara Bennett before, during, and after the ceremony.”

Vanessa’s solicitor leaned in.

Vanessa ignored him.

“Yes.”

Daniel paused.

“At the time of the wedding, did you know Ethan might not be the father?”

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Not Ethan.

Richard.

The whole room saw it.

Richard did not move.

That was his mistake.

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

“Yes.”

Ethan made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost pain.

Daniel asked, “Who else knew?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“Richard’s office.”

The judge turned toward Richard.

And for the first time, Richard Hayes had nowhere clean to look.
