I Was Pregnant at My Wedding — Then Another Pregnant Woman Stopped the Ceremony and Said He Was Her Baby’s Father Too

Chapter 62: Ethan Asked for the Door He Broke

Ethan Hayes arrived at the private clinic twenty minutes before Clara’s appointment, wearing a navy coat and the expression of a man trying to look like a father before anyone checked the facts.

Clara saw him through the glass doors.

For one sharp second, her body wanted to turn away.

Not because she feared him.

Because her tired heart remembered too many rooms where his voice had become a demand.

Then Lily moved under her ribs, steady and stubborn, and Clara kept walking.

Olivia slowed beside her.

“I can tell reception we saw a gas leak,” she muttered.

“There is no gas leak.”

“There is emotional gas.”

“Olivia.”

“Fine. Legal silence.”

Daniel was already inside, speaking to the receptionist with the calm precision that made ordinary people trust him and dishonest people sweat.

Ethan stepped forward. “Clara.”

Daniel turned before Clara answered. “Mr Hayes, all communication through counsel today.”

Ethan looked past him. “I am here for the scan.”

Clara’s hand rested over Lily. “You were not invited.”

“I am her father.”

“You are her biological father. That does not make you authorised medical access.”

His face hardened. “You cannot keep me away from everything.”

“I am keeping you away from the rooms you helped make unsafe.”

The sentence stopped him.

Good.

The receptionist looked from one to the other and then down at the file.

“Ms Bennett,” she said gently, “your consent preferences are noted. Only Ms Grant may accompany you.”

Ethan’s eyes sharpened. “I want that recorded as my objection.”

Daniel lifted his pen. “Already noted.”

Ethan hated that.

Not because he objected.

Because someone else had controlled the record first.

He lowered his voice, trying for wounded instead of angry. “Clara, please. Do not make me wait outside while my daughter is on a screen.”

Clara felt the old pull of him.

The man who could make himself look abandoned by consequences.

Then she remembered the altar.

The clinic sticker.

The fake report.

The message from Richard.

The request for her hospital details.

“You made me stand alone in a chapel,” she said. “You can sit alone in a waiting room.”

Olivia’s lips parted.

Even Daniel paused.

Ethan went pale.

The receptionist pressed a button. “Ms Bennett, the sonographer is ready.”

Clara walked past Ethan.

He did not touch her.

He had learned that much.

Inside the scan room, the lights were low and the machine hummed softly. Olivia stood beside Clara, one hand on her shoulder, while Lily appeared on the screen in bright shifting grey.

For the first time that morning, Clara forgot the internet.

She forgot Richard.

She forgot Ethan outside the door, trying to look wronged in a room full of staff trained to follow consent forms.

There was only Lily.

Alive.

Private.

Hers.

The sonographer smiled. “Strong heartbeat.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Two words.

Enough.

When they came out, Ethan was still waiting.

He stood at once. “Is she all right?”

“She is well,” Clara said.

His face crumpled with relief he had no right to demand from her.

“Can I see the image?”

Clara looked at the printed scan in Olivia’s hand.

Then at Ethan.

“No.”

His mouth opened.

She continued before he could speak. “Medical updates go through the agreed channel. You do not get intimacy because you dislike procedure.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His face changed.

“Clinic reception just logged a call,” he said. “Someone from Hayes Family Office asked whether Ms Bennett had checked in.”

Ethan stared. “I did not do that.”

Clara looked at him.

For once, she believed him.

That was worse.

Daniel turned the screen.

Caller reference: Rebecca Shaw.

Richard had asked for the door.

Ethan had only been sent to distract from the handle.
