Chapter 47: The Wrong Paper Had a Signature
Daniel did not chase the fake report.
He chased the paper that came before it.
That was why, by noon, Clara was back in his office with a blanket around her shoulders, Olivia beside her, and the false paternity image printed upside down on the table like a dead insect nobody wanted to touch.
Ethan was not invited.
That made the room cleaner.
Daniel laid out five pages.
The fake screenshot.
The laboratory’s denial.
Dr Vale’s junior administrator email.
Vanessa’s appointment cancellation.
The draft request from Dr Vale’s office.
“Look at the order,” Daniel said.
Olivia leaned forward. “The lie came first.”
“No,” Clara said slowly. “The request came first. The public lie came after they knew a request existed.”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone wanted a paper trail that looked real enough to support a fake result.”
He turned the draft request around.
No alleged father named.
Three comparison subjects listed.
Clara Bennett.
Unborn child of Clara Bennett.
Vanessa Cole.
Even after seeing it the night before, Clara felt the same cold wave move through her.
This was not confusion.
This was design.
Olivia whispered, “Why compare Vanessa to Lily?”
Daniel tapped the note box.
Priority handling requested due to connected family succession matter.
“Because this was never only about paternity,” he said. “It was about positioning both pregnancies inside the same trust argument.”
Clara looked at Lily’s name, not yet born and already being moved like an item in a ledger.
Her hand tightened over the blanket.
Then Daniel added one more page.
“This arrived from the lab’s compliance team.”
The account used to submit the draft request had paid a preliminary processing fee.
Not from Dr Vale’s personal account.
Not from Ethan.
Not from Vanessa.
From a corporate card registered to Hayes Holdings Family Office.
Olivia sat back. “There it is.”
Daniel did not smile. “Not all of it.”
He pointed to the authorisation field.
Rebecca Shaw.
Richard’s assistant.
The same name from Vanessa’s emergency contact form.
The same name on Hayes House emails.
The same name appearing wherever Richard needed distance.
Clara stared until the letters became less like a name and more like a corridor.
“Can we use it?” she asked.
“Yes,” Daniel said. “Carefully.”
He drafted a notice to Hayes Holdings, Dr Vale’s office, Rebecca Shaw, Ethan, Margaret, and Vanessa’s solicitor.
No accusation.
No theatre.
Just preservation demands, factual inconsistencies, and a request for all records connected to the draft paternity request and any communication concerning Clara Bennett, Vanessa Cole, or either unborn child.
Olivia read it. “This is very polite for a grenade.”
Daniel ignored her.
Clara looked at the false report again.
The fake result had hurt her publicly.
But the request behind it had done something better for her.
It had put Richard’s office in the chain.
Her phone buzzed.
Margaret.
Clara let Daniel answer on speaker.
Margaret’s voice came thin and tight. “Richard just called an emergency governance meeting.”
Daniel looked at Clara.
Margaret continued, “Subject is Ethan’s judgement.”
Ethan’s judgement.
Not Richard’s conduct.
Not Rebecca’s authorisation.
Ethan.
Clara understood immediately.
Richard was not denying the room had caught fire.
He was choosing who would burn first.
