I Was Pregnant at My Wedding — Then Another Pregnant Woman Stopped the Ceremony and Said He Was Her Baby’s Father Too

Chapter 32: Margaret Finally Looked Afraid

Margaret Hayes arrived at Olivia’s flat in sunglasses and a cream coat that cost more than Clara’s first car.

She looked immaculate.

That was how Clara knew she was frightened.

No Hayes woman came undone in public. They tightened. They polished. They turned terror into tailoring and called it dignity.

Olivia opened the door but did not step aside.

Margaret removed her sunglasses. “I need to speak with Clara.”

Olivia looked over her shoulder. “Do we like her today?”

Clara sat at the table with the black envelope, the Vanessa photograph, Sophie’s email, Mara’s note, and three screenshots arranged in clear sleeves.

“No,” Clara said. “But let her in.”

Margaret entered as if the flat had teeth.

Her eyes went straight to the photograph.

Then to Clara’s stomach.

Then away.

Daniel was already on speaker. “Mrs Hayes, before you speak, understand I am present as Clara’s solicitor.”

“I assumed you would be.”

“Good.”

Margaret sat without being invited. Her hands were clasped so tightly the knuckles had paled.

Clara waited.

Margaret did not begin with sorry.

Of course she did not.

She began with the company.

“The board met this morning.”

Olivia muttered, “Romantic.”

Margaret ignored her. “The wedding footage, Vanessa’s deleted scan, the tender interference, and now questions about Julian have reached three directors.”

Clara stared at her.

“They are asking whether Ethan mismanaged a private matter so badly that it became a governance risk.”

“So now you are afraid because the embarrassment is measurable.”

Margaret flinched.

Only slightly.

“Yes,” she said.

The honesty was almost worse.

Daniel asked, “What exactly has the board questioned?”

Margaret lifted a folder from her handbag. “Whether Ethan failed to disclose a personal conflict involving potential trust beneficiaries. Whether family resources were used to influence private individuals. Whether Richard knew before the ceremony.”

Clara’s fingers tightened on the table.

“And did he?”

Margaret did not answer.

Clara laughed once. “You came here because the board is circling Ethan, but Richard is holding the leash.”

Margaret’s face hardened from habit.

Then it cracked.

“You think I wanted Vanessa there?” she asked.

“I think you wanted me quiet.”

“Yes.”

The room went still.

Margaret looked at Clara, and for the first time there was no performance between them.

“I wanted the wedding completed. I wanted the child born legitimate. I wanted the press bored by Monday. I wanted control, Clara. I will not pretend otherwise.”

Olivia opened her mouth.

Clara raised one hand.

Margaret continued. “But I did not know Richard had done this before.”

Sophie’s email lay between them like a second witness.

“I did not know Marcus Bell’s name would come back. I did not know Julian had called your client. And I did not know Richard had made alternative arrangements.”

Clara heard the phrase before she understood it.

“Alternative arrangements?”

Margaret looked at Daniel’s phone. “I should not have said that.”

Daniel’s voice was calm. “You already did.”

Margaret stood, walked to the window, then turned back. “Richard does not trust Ethan. He thinks my son is too vain to inherit properly and too sentimental to be efficient.”

“Ethan?” Olivia said. “Sentimental?”

“To Richard, anything that is not calculation is sentiment.”

Clara’s baby shifted. She pressed a palm to the movement.

Margaret watched it with an expression Clara disliked.

Wanting.

Regretful.

Hungry in a polished way.

Clara said, “Do not look at my child like she is evidence.”

Margaret looked away.

Daniel asked, “What are these alternative arrangements?”

Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out a sealed white envelope.

“Richard asked me to give you this.”

Clara did not move.

Margaret placed it on the table. “He said if you refused, he would deliver it himself.”

The white envelope sat beside the black one.

Clara did not touch it.

“What is inside?”

Margaret’s voice dropped. “A proposal.”

“For what?”

“For protecting the baby.”

Daniel said, “From whom?”

Margaret answered too softly.

“From you, if Richard can convince people you need protecting from yourself.”
